This new “sensitive” masculinity, where a softer voice and body, creativity and sensitivity, and sophisticated sensibilities replace alpha male imagery, is dangerous. A man aware of the phrases “toxic masculinity”, “intersectionality”, and “socialization” more often than not will use them as disguised weapons for his soft misogyny, rather than use them to interrogate his own position. Switching from one category of masculinity to another is not a solution. When given the chance, the sensitive artist will enact the same violence as the muscular frat boy, to pretend otherwise is foolish.

When men’s emotional issues no longer leave body counts full of dead or battered or deeply emotionally drained women, then I will care about grown men whining about their lack of emotional insight. Until then make your own groups, get a therapist who isn’t a random female friend, and figure it out- it’s not feminists’ problem.

the real “problem with political correctness” is not that it’s considered offensive to use slurs, but that there are now many “progressive” environments where saying the right things is more important than doing the right thing. it’s why it’s so easy for abusers to gain traction in leftist circles (they learn the right words quickly and employ them to frame their own behavior as progressive); it’s why so much potential activist energy gets poured into fighting about language; it’s why moderate liberals didn’t believe fer/guson had a problem until the police emails with actual racist language were leaked. (you can do racist things, you just can’t SAY racist things.) i don’t have a neat conclusion here but a related point is that i’m so much happier since i started focusing on like, being a good kind caring person instead of trying to remove the word “crazy” from the vocabulary of everyone in my family

Just saying this is truly one of the best “discourse” posts on this site like……this hits the nail directly on the head re: what is going on with language right now and everyone pushing back in the notes only serves to further prove the point it’s making

I thank the girl that had me head over heels, giddy after every conversation, and losing sleep. The one who dragged me out of my darkest month, simply by existing. The one who I would stay out with until 2am, knowing I had to be up for work at 6am. Bottles of wine on leather couches and Harry Potter quizzes in Indian restaurants. Four hour garage conversations and 10 hour coffee dates. Standing in front of that blue door so many times. Seeing you after long workdays, because I was never too tired. It wasn’t you, it was never supposed to be you - but thank you for showing me the feeling that I’m meant to have. A feeling my childhood self wasn’t sure existed. I’m supposed to feel that way and I thank you for being the one who taught me. I know I’m worthy of that now. I’ll never settle for less and she will thank you for showing me.

Your old blue door has been repainted red.

I hope California knows how lucky they are.
